Kickoff {Fall Fresh Start}

Hi, friends!  So, I checked in last night on IG stories {sans makeup and with wet hair…what a way to jump in!  Keepin’ it real…} and talked a little bit about now being the perfect time to get a little ‘fresh start,’ if that’s what you’ve been wanting for yourself.  I’m not sure if it’s the whole ‘back to school’ vibe that has been imprinted on us, or if it’s that first gust of cooler, fresh air {but this year with 90 degree weather, that’s definitely not the case…} that gets us all going and motivated after summer’s easy breezy, lazy carefree days.  

Whether it’s wanting to eat better or be more productive in your work {or, both} it’s kind of the newer, less pressure-filled January, but still with the ‘new season’ kick-start that research has shown actually works in helping us make changes {Google:  Fresh Start Effect}.  Any day is a good day to make a positive change, but we know that if we start something new on these ‘special days,’ like Mondays, the start of a new month, new season, or new year – or anything else that’s in some way different {like a birthday}, it has a tendency to ‘stick’ more than anything we might have started on a more ‘regular’ day.   

So that’s why I’m taking this first Monday of fall, last week of September, to really get things in motion for a really awesome fall {in my head fall starts on October 1…especially when it’s 90 degrees…NINETY…on the east coast, at the end of September.}

Speaking of 90…on Monday – the first Monday of October – there will be about 90 days in the rest of 2017.  A perfect time to get yourself in gear, have a really awesome rest of ‘17, and get a headstart on ringing in the new year living the life you really want to live, no?

So let’s talk a little bit about goals.  I’m asking the universe for a tall-order this go around, looking to make a lot of small tweaks that will amount to really big things…from improvement in sleep to food to wardrobe to productivity to peace.  After a busy summer that didn’t give me much time for downtime, reflection, or progress, I’m really craving a reset in some basic things {like getting enough sleep and drinking enough water every day} to some larger undertakings {like a new schedule and productivity approach – so I can finally put into place all.the.ideas that have been in my head and on my heart for so long}.  I’m pretty excited to share these with you every day this week, and every following Monday – so, hold me to it, ok?  {update:  I didn’t share every day last week.  Life got crazy.  It happens, so I’m sharing the things I wanted to touch on last week in this post, and then we’ll go from here.  The good news?  Today – Monday, October 2 – is exactly 90 days until the end of the year.  Game ON.}

To start, I’m bringing things back to ground level and really getting back to basics:

Sleep.  Like most of us, I don’t get enough.  And while sometimes things genuinely come up, I could probably be getting a solid hour more {at least} than I am now if I didn’t waste time.  I’m putting some rules in to place for this ‘sleep rehab,’ and I’m nervous, but eager, to see what a difference more sleep will make.

  • No ‘scrolling’ through social media after 8pm.   It usually ends up being ‘mindless scrolling’ anyway after this point, and I probably waste at least 30-45 minutes each night with just this.  Alarm set, phone goes away at 8pm.
  • #inthetens.  I need a lot of sleep, and usually end up going to bed close to midnight.  And I get up really early, so it’s not uncommon for me to get 5-6 hours of sleep, which isn’t nearly enough.  If I get to sleep as close to 10 as possible {but being realistic}, then I usually end up feeling pretty well rested the next day.  And a few of these in a row, and I feel great {but always fall off the wagon}, so I can’t even imagine what 90 days would do.
  • No snooze button.  Enough said.  {My record is 2 hours.}
  • No crazy sleeping in on the weekends.  This just screws up the entire sleep cycle – and I was up staring at the ceiling until 2am this past Sunday because I had woken up at 9 and then took a 2 hour nap.  

Schedule.

I love this quote, and it’s so true.  You could have the biggest dreams and best-laid out plans for yourself, but if you don’t act on them every day, you’ll probably never see any results.  I’m the number one offender of having big dreams, and then writing down plans, organizing things on my calendar, and making lists of things to do, and I never do them.  Or I get something started, and I don’t finish it.  I’m also great for reaching out to people and getting something in motion, but never following through.  If I actually did what I said I wanted to do each day, I honestly can’t even imagine what I might have accomplished.  And these are basic things – like sending emails and asking questions and such, and getting to the gym or that yoga class every week.  So, from this point forward, I want to be able to answer that question – just what WOULD happen if I did all the things on that calendar and in those to-do lists?

Food & Fitness.  I really don’t want to get into this too much, because I’ve said it all before, and this is a thing that’s pretty black and white.  So – short and sweet…I’m putting it out there – here and now.  I’m committing to:

  • Five days of exercise per week {3 cardio + strength training; 2 yoga classes} PLUS 30 minutes of something active on those other two days.
  • Half my body weight in ounces of water each day {so, if you weigh 140 pounds – which I do not, but just go with me here –  you need to drink 70 ounces of water each day}.
  • Healthy food {I’ll get into these details later} and NO SUGAR.  I know this is drastic, but you guys – I just have to do it.  For someone who loves to cook and bake – and blogs about it! – it will be so hard..so so so hard.   But I have to get to a good place with this, and in this area in particular, if you give me an inch, I’ll take a mile, so – for now – it just all has to be off limits.  Ugh.

If you want to join me – take like five minutes to close your eyes and think about what you’d like more of – or less of – in your life.  DIG DEEP & DREAM BIG.  What changes could you make that would help you live the life you’ve always wanted?  What would REALLY make the difference between now and living the life you REALLY want to live?  What steps would bring you closer to experiencing your best life?  Don’t think too hard, as it’s usually the first thing {or first few things} that pops into your head that’s most important.

You actually don’t even need to think about it.  You already know.  Do the things you’ve always wanted to do.  Don’t be scared if it’s something that seems really ‘big.’  We were meant to do BIG things.  We were meant to meet hard challenges head-on.  We were meant to live big lives.

You know what you need to do.  The time is now.
