If you liked the honey lip scrub, you’ll LOVE this honey face wash! Before you think I’m one step away from moving to the hippie commune, honey is actually an amazing thing to wash your face with for a number of reasons, not the LEAST of which is that using food-grade products {i.e. things you’d put IN your body} are a really good option when considering skincare practices {things you’d put ON your body}. Most products sold {even if they’re supposed to be ‘natural,’ which is a label that means absolutely nothing regarding regulatory practices} are laden with god-only-knows-what-this-is type products, and as whatever you put on your skin goes right into your bloodstream, it’s a pretty darn good idea to be really careful about what you put on your skin.
I got the idea to use honey as a face wash from the lovely Lily of Kale & Caramel, and I would encourage you to read her *extremely thorough* post regarding the rationale behind and benefits of using honey to wash your face, but to summarize – honey is naturally antibacterial, moisturizing, and pH regulating. Lily recommends regular raw, unfiltered honey right from the jar to wash her face…can’t get any easier {or economical, amiright?!} than that! This ‘recipe’ modifies this slightly, as I use honey as the second step in my dual-cleansing method {I use a gentle foaming cleanser first to remove makeup…I’m using up the cleanser that I have and working towards using just a natural oil for makeup removal}, and I wanted something that was a little more liquid and that had a tad more exfoliation.
In a glass bowl, I mixed:
¼ cup unfiltered raw honey {I got mine from Trader Joes for less than $10}
⅛ cup organic local honey
1 teaspoon sugar {I used an organic cane sugar}
Store in an air-tight glass jar, and use relatively quickly {these are food-based ingredients, remember! I like to go through mine within a month or so}.
To use:
Remove makeup {with a natural oil, makeup remover, or gentle cleanser}, then wet face with warm water. Scoop out {with your fingers or a spoon} ½ to 1 teaspoon of the honey face wash, and lightly massage onto your skin, just as you would any other cleanser. Rinse well {especially around the hairline, in case any honey has traveled it’s way there} and then moisturize as typical {perhaps with a 3 ingredient DIY face oil!?}.
I promise, this will be the best smelling face wash you’ll ever use, and your skin will feel great, and you’ll feel great for using such an *actually natural* product…not to mention – I adore this little bear and seeing him on my sink totally brightens up my day!
Also – as always with skincare products, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before using – especially if you have sensitive skin!!
